Psychologies

What’s new • And what’s coming next

Your Letters • On avoiding catfishing and dealing with grief

Creating time and space • It’s not only AI that can be revolutionary: people can be too, remembers Harriet Minter

Have we forgotten how to feel? • Professor Tanya Byron on self-diagnosis, the language of mental health, social media and why sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is simply listen.

WHY WE NEED nature RIGHT NOW • I am a nature girl — at least in the sit-outside-with-bare-feet-and-read-a-book sense, if not necessarily in the hike-up-a-mountain-and-build-my-own-bivvy sense. In spring and summer it’s easy to satisfy this part of myself. Even on rainy days, the air is soft and mild, and coffee in the garden provides a swift morning boost. There are holidays by the sea and long, light evenings for walks or river swims or just lying on the grass staring up at the sky. It’s frequently easier to be outside than it is inside, as anyone who has ever gazed longingly out of an office window on a beautiful sunny day can tell you.

When a friendship ends without an ending • When a lifelong friendship ends without explanation, we can grieve not only the person we’ve lost but the future we imagined sharing with them, explains Kim Morgan.

Trick or treat THE THINGS WE THINK WE SHOULDN’T ENJOY DOING • I have a confession. I am obsessed with the reality show, Love is Blind. I’ve watched the UK version, the version based in France, Brazil, Poland and am currently working my way through, Love is Blind: Habibi, the version set in the United Arab Emirates. Many would call this a guilty pleasure, after all, it has all the hallmarks of one. It’s fun, considered “low-status” and something that certain among us may feel shame to admit that we enjoy. I, for one, no longer ascribe to the idea of a “guilty” pleasure, though I am curious as to why we associate feelings of guilt to things that bring us joy.

“Being an outsider has been my superpower” • Ever feel like you don’t fit in? Award-winning actress and writer Dame Meera Syal explains why not following the crowd can be the source of your greatest joy and success.

THE MOMENT I UNDERSTOOD MY OCD • I’ve been a champion worrier all my adult life. Specifically, I find the myriad unlikely but catastrophic possibilities that life presents difficult to cope with and I accordingly chase certainty like a dog in a comedy sketch chasing a string of sausages.

The books that help us heal • Stories can offer refuge, help us recognise ourselves — and give us the courage to write our own stories, reflects Jackee Holder.

Master the science of sleep • Sleep tells the story of your life. And over time, drifting into satisfied slumber can feel like a task on a never-ending to-do list. The good news is that you can retrain your body and brain to truly relax and let go, writes Greta Solomon.

What are your nocturnal habits telling you? • Sleep ought...
